How much protein does a working dog need?
How much protein does a working dog need? Most healthy adult working dogs should eat a complete diet that meets adult-maintenance standards, with many active dogs doing well on roughly 24–30% protein on a dry-matter basis. Dogs completing prolonged, demanding endurance work may need a more protein-dense diet, but there is no single percentage for every working dog. Workload, calorie intake, age, health and the protein's digestibility all affect the answer.
Protein supports muscle maintenance and repair, enzymes, hormones, immune function and the replacement of tissues such as skin and coat. However, simply choosing the food with the highest protein percentage does not guarantee better performance. A working dog also needs enough total energy, appropriate fat and carbohydrate, and a complete balance of vitamins and minerals.
What veterinary nutrition standards say
The National Research Council (NRC) and the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) provide reference requirements for dogs. AAFCO's adult-maintenance nutrient profile sets a minimum crude protein level of 18% on a dry-matter basis, while its growth and reproduction profile sets a minimum of 22.5%. These are minimum levels for complete diets, not ideal performance targets for every dog.
The NRC expresses some requirements relative to calorie intake, which is useful because a dog's nutrient intake depends on both the food's composition and how much the dog eats. An adult dog doing substantial work usually consumes more calories and therefore more total protein than an inactive dog eating the same food.
Neither AAFCO nor the NRC provides one universal protein target for all working dogs. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) likewise emphasises assessing the individual animal and choosing a nutritionally complete food made with appropriate formulation and quality-control processes.

Work type matters as much as job title
“Working dog” can describe very different activity patterns:
- Short, intense work: Flyball, agility, sprint racing and brief detection tasks rely heavily on rapid energy production. More protein is not necessarily the main dietary priority.
- Intermittent work: Farm, police, security and search dogs may alternate bursts of activity with waiting or lower-intensity movement. Their needs vary considerably by shift length, climate and terrain.
- Endurance work: Sled, herding, hunting and long-duration search dogs may work for hours. They often need a highly energy-dense diet, with sufficient protein to maintain lean tissue during heavy training.
- Occasional work: A dog that works at weekends but rests most of the week may need fewer calories than its job title suggests. Feeding continuously for peak workload can cause weight gain.
For many active adults, 24–30% protein on a dry-matter basis is a reasonable range to discuss with a vet or veterinary nutritionist. A dog undergoing sustained endurance training may be fed above this range, but increasing protein should be part of a complete dietary plan rather than an isolated change.
Training volume matters too. Protein and calorie needs can rise during a working season, then fall during rest or rehabilitation. Adjust portions gradually as workload changes.
How to compare protein levels accurately
The crude protein percentage on a label is usually reported “as fed”, meaning it includes the food's water. This makes direct comparisons between dry and wet foods misleading.
Use this calculation to convert protein to a dry-matter basis:
Dry-matter protein % = as-fed protein % ÷ (100 − moisture %) × 100
For example, a dry food containing 26% protein and 10% moisture provides:
26 ÷ 90 × 100 = 28.9% protein on a dry-matter basis
A wet food containing 9% protein and 75% moisture provides:
9 ÷ 25 × 100 = 36% protein on a dry-matter basis
The wet food appears lower in protein on the label but is higher after water is removed from the comparison.
Protein relative to calories is also useful. If the manufacturer supplies metabolised energy in kilocalories per kilogram, calculate:
Grams of protein per 1,000 kcal = crude protein % × 10,000 ÷ kcal/kg
A food with 26% protein and 3,800 kcal/kg provides about 68 grams of crude protein per 1,000 kcal. Ask the manufacturer for calorie content and a typical nutrient analysis if these are not published.
Protein is only part of a working diet
Protein cannot compensate for inadequate calorie intake. When a dog does not receive enough dietary energy, it may use amino acids for fuel rather than tissue maintenance and recovery.
Fat is energy-dense and can be especially important for dogs performing prolonged aerobic work. Carbohydrate can support glycogen replenishment and repeated high-intensity activity. The best proportions depend on the task, training schedule and the dog's digestive tolerance.
Choose a food labelled as complete for the dog's life stage. Avoid unbalancing it with large amounts of meat, eggs or protein supplements. Extras should generally remain a small part of calorie intake unless a veterinary nutritionist has formulated the whole ration.

How to tell whether the diet is working
Do not judge a working diet by protein percentage alone. Track the dog over several weeks using:
- Body weight: Weigh regularly under similar conditions. A stable number is useful, but it does not show whether muscle or fat has changed.
- Body condition score: Ribs should be easy to feel with a visible waist when viewed from above. The ideal score may vary slightly by task and veterinary guidance.
- Muscle condition: Watch for loss around the spine, skull, shoulders and pelvis. Muscle condition is assessed separately from body fat.
- Work and recovery: Record stamina, willingness to work and recovery between sessions. Reduced performance has many possible causes and is not automatically a protein problem.
- Digestive tolerance: Persistent vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation or marked stool changes warrant veterinary advice.
- Skin and coat: Poor coat quality can have nutritional and non-nutritional causes, so it should not be used to diagnose a deficiency at home.
Change foods gradually where possible. Keep the rest of the routine consistent so that you can identify whether the new diet is tolerated.
When to ask a vet for individual advice
Speak to a vet before making major dietary changes if the dog is losing weight, performing poorly, recovering from injury, pregnant, growing, elderly or affected by a medical condition. Kidney, liver, gastrointestinal and urinary disorders can change what is appropriate, but protein should not be restricted without a specific veterinary reason.
A vet can assess body and muscle condition, investigate medical causes of poor performance and refer you to a board-certified veterinary nutritionist when a custom diet is needed. Seek prompt veterinary care for collapse, breathing difficulty, severe weakness, repeated vomiting or signs of heat illness.

Start with a complete, life-stage-appropriate food. For many healthy adult working dogs, about 24–30% protein on a dry-matter basis is a practical range, not a universal prescription. Common questions
Does a working dog need more protein than a pet dog?
Often, but not simply because it has a job. A dog doing regular strenuous work may benefit from more protein and calories than a sedentary pet, while an occasionally active dog may do well on a standard complete adult diet. Actual workload, body condition and total food intake matter most.
Can a working dog have too much protein?
Healthy dogs can generally tolerate protein above minimum requirements, but excess protein does not automatically improve strength or stamina. It adds calories and may displace other nutrients if the overall diet is poorly balanced. Dogs with medical conditions need individual veterinary advice.
Should I give my working dog a protein supplement?
